But the difference between HTTP and HTTPS is that the latter is encrypted; nobody can snoop on the contents of the websites you visit. Over HTTP, any middleman (employer, ISP, Google, DNS provider, whatever) could see everything about your connection - your username/password, every reply you submit, the full contents of every page you visit. With HTTPS, they can see nothing but the domain name of the site you're on ("minichan.org") and nothing else.
As for www vs non-www, it's just a subdomain some websites choose to use. There are arguments for (https://www.yes-www.org/) and against (http://no-www.org/).

He probably was, but I find people gain more understanding when you answer the question they asked as opposed to the one you assume they were trying to ask, and let them discover the small flaw in their question themselves.
