Nobody could do a better or worse job at controlling the virus. It's here, and no matter what precautions are in place, it's not stopping anytime soon.

We were actually not doing bad in cases per capita until the George Floyd riots shot the rates up. In terms of deaths per capita, the US is still lower than five first world countries (Sweden, Italy, Spain, Belgium, UK). Of course you can always shift the goalposts to total cases, or cases per capita, or tests per capita, or whatever you like to make a point.
