I would say they have a lot to offer. As much as any other leisure activity, at least. They are much more interactive than a movie or a book and can require as much imagination and thought. Modern games played online require not only imagination but strategy, planning, teamwork, and coordination. They can also offer people an outlet for emotions they may otherwise not express, and, when played in a group, a chance to socialize and a common interest with others. We've been making up games to play in our spare time for thousands of years.
I see no problem with it unless someone becomes too involved in games and forgets about life. But then, we pay people millions of dollars to play football and race cars too, so maybe it's not that crazy in a society that has produced career athletes, professional gamblers, and world chess champions.

The trouble with video-games and roleplaying games, and even escapist fiction, is that one day you realize that you're robbing your life of adventure and meaning by pursuing empty adventure and artificial meaning in boxed off fantasy worlds. Most people love fantasy and such because they hunger for a more vital way of living. Unfortunately, they forget that the world outside belongs to them just as much, and much more than, their fantasy worlds.
