With SS, my pension, and 401k I'll be living better than I do now.

I wont even need my 401k for expenses. I think I'll use it to buy a home.

In the unlikely event I'm actually still alive.

Pension. Pensions are $$$. I'll be fully invested at 50 and able to get a job somewhere else that has a pension or matching program for 401k contributions an make more bank.

Meh, it goes in cycles.

Not enough to really worry about at the moment.

Right. The government wasn't formed to guarantee security or anything like that. And letting people rot away in their own self imposed misfortune doesn't constitute any kind of security risk. Terribly poor people, whether by choice or not, are never prone to violence or crime. We shouldn't try to abate that kind of risk, mostly because it's nigger's and they kill each other for sport, which I'm fine with because I'm a sociopath and couldn't care less about destitute old people who, like it or not, have absolutely nothing on which they can subsist.

I need to look and C when I am forced to collect mine. Can now but the longer I hold out I think its worth more. Last eye looked it was running about $2400 a month but doooooon't quote me on that. It was at Maximum but the web site said it could be larger if I just waited.

I do NOT want to remain ALIVE Unless I am fit and can have much fun ALIVE. This living to just watch TV or read a book in a rocking chair is NOT 4Me.

And I want no part is having to take a pill to get it UP. Teens ask me for a dance to some real fast music and often the young girl cannot maintain heart rate without running out of breath. Shame to have some real cute gal who cannot keep up with me.

The idea of a long healthy life is not appealing to me. My weight is a side effect. If I was in perfect health, I would just enjoy clothes shopping instead of dreading it.

Exactly. And Government is meant to provide security for us, and part of that is ensuring that doesn't happen. It's part of the necessary expense of maintaining society. What you suggest would cost us more in the long run. Take away the boomers safety net and see if the streets don't run red.

I never EVER enjoyed buying clothes - Just hate the trying on part of it. I am more then ok with GF's shopping and am very patient but when it comes to me I just HATE HATE HATE it. So if I find a pair of Levis I like I buy multiple pairs which is one reason I really work at keeping weight in check.

Me too, if I can find another job with a pension. Most companies are phasing them out. I just barely was able to get mine. They also tried to get em to do the 401k matching. They only match up to 2.5%, so I would take on all the risk for possibly more money (but from the projections, its not. It's only more money WITH my contributions. So shady).

Easiest way to get 2 pensions is to work 2 government jobs. For example, someone who joins the military at age 18 could stay in for 20 years and get a pension at age 38. He could then go work for the CIA, FBI, FAA, State Dept. or pretty much any other government desk job for another 20 years, and have 2 pensions by age 58.

A lot of people are bitching about this though, saying that one reason for our massive debt are these "lucrative" pension plans, so who knows how much longer they'll last.

In USA the Crash did great harm to 401K's - I came out ok but in all cases lost up to 15% on each and recovery may take a few years to get back to just even. Luck has a lot to do with it. I bought some real estate low and it jumped up like crazy and of course crashed along with everyone else. Just lucky I bought in well below the crash point. That of course is pure dumb luck.

Gold has been very good to me over the years as well as Oil. Years ago I figured Oil was no longer being made by nature so I bought and bought. These days I have almost given up trying to make money on Oil but just 6 months ago sure did.

Social Security in USA for average persons runs around
"What is the average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker?
The average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker was about $1,177 at the beginning of 2011. This amount changes monthly based upon the total amount of all benefits paid and the total number of people receiving benefits."

As long as you didn't panic and cash out your 401K, no damage was done at all. I continued to put money into my 401K throughout the recession and it's already fully recovered and then some.

Yea and there have been tymes I wood have pulled out from 401's to buy more real estate except It makes no sense when I THINK they will recover. So far that is going positive but real S L O W so that means I am not making money in terms of growth/interest on those funds. Friends have lost as much as 75%

Yea, and those are currently being attacked. I don't see government pensions for public employees being around much longer, let alone after I get fully invested here.

For some reason people think public workers aren't humans doing a job who require proper compensation.

Still, Its something to consider. Thanks for the tip.

I think that governemnt employees, like most employees, deserve a pension for their years of service. Especially those who go into the military, get deployed, work 70+ hours per week, etc. However, I do think that getting a pension after only 20 years of service is cutting it too close. No one retires at age 38. I think that in response to all these calls for budget cuts, the government might change the minimum numbers of years of service to collect a pension from 20 to 30, and I think they might also make it so that you can only collect that pension for 20 years or so. I think that's fair and should help balance things out.

I read about people that lost it all. My choice of how I split investments such as Mutual's vs Bonds was again just dumb luck. I chose very safe Gov Bonds and only took minutes to select Mutual's on most of my 401's and to be honest I have NEVER really worked out a plan towards retirement because I enjoy the work I do. Started out as a hobby and am now paid to play except yes there are tymes it has been painful and mean. That's life.

@previous (H)

In USA a lot of small cities are close 2 or just starting out going bankrupt re police-fire-local Gov pensions. I live in San Diego County which I think is ok on $$$ but San Diego City - Many say they should file for bankruptcy re pensions so far out of control.

That full payout after 20 years maybe its because so many Gov jobs are paper pushing and boring. I can see Cops and Firefighters getting out after 20 as each job is truly life on line and can be nasty so often. Cops and burning buildings with chemicals and what cops put up with 20 and out seems fair to me.

Anonymous H replied with this 15 years ago, 21 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^] [v] #181,020

@previous (Syntax)
But the problem is, if someone retires after 20 years, at age 38, and lives to be 90, then they collect 52 years of pension for 20 years of work? And then pensions that we're paying out keep on stacking up. People can work at least until age 48 before getting a pension, and it doesn't have to be life-threatening work, and even then, the pension should cut off after 20 years or so to make room for others to retire.

There are plenty of desk jobs even for firefighters and cops.

How about you can't start collecting till 65 unless you take a reduced amount. That's how most businesses do it.
