I'm worried for America. How many people will be evicted and end up homeless soon? Unemployment is capped at ridiculously low amounts in some states, nowhere near enough to live on.

Eight or nine states average about $275 a week on the low end. Another seven are around $400...and the rest range between $500-$700+...with a couple at about $1000.

Add $600 to any of those amounts.

That's how much they have been getting to sit on their couch every week for two months.

Millions of people have been getting an extra $2400 a month for two months.

With the two stim checks that will be $9600 in two months for a couple that were on unemployment in June and july.

And that's not even counting the sixteen regular unemployment checks they collected between the two of them!

Everyone else? $2400

Unemployment comes from a fund that you pay into while working. They earned that money. It's not welfare. The amount you get paid is determined by how much you paid into unemployment while working.
And those are the maximum amounts. Most people don't get paid the maximum.

How much came out of each weekly check for it? You dont even have a clue, lol.
From the first hour you work your employer is paying you a set wage per hour...from which NOTHING is withrawn for 'Unemployment insurance'

Technically your Employer 'paid into it' as part of their business expenses.

Depends on the country. In the US it's all funded by just the general pool of tax money but we have users from around the world here and it may be done differently in different places.

That's a ridiculous terrible system lmao. Almost as bad as having health insurance tied to your employer. Regardless, you need to have been employed for 12 out of the last 15 months, in most states. You earn unemployment payments by working. The payment is a percentage of your average wages earned over that time period.
And you really think that the employer doesn't take those insurance payments out of your wages? You're really naïve if that's what you think.

Regardless, here's the average unemployment payments per state, much more informative than the max.

Oklahoma pays $44/week lmao.

I think only Massachusetts has a chance at paying more than $1k/week. Most are around $3-500/week which is realistically just enough to get by in average cost of living places.

Your employer uses what they pay into Unemployment insurance from THEIR earnings and the guidelines for that are based on the amount they pay you. There is NO designated deductions from your weekly check for 'unemployment insurance'.

Almost all are above $400
13 minus one or two are not... and if you round up to $400 those that are above $350 than it is less than 13. Thanks.

You have never had a job long enough to get a pay stub explaining what benefits you are eligible for.

By my count, 25 states have their max payment at $500, which is not to say you actually get that much. For instance in Texas, which has a max payment of $521, they calculate by dividing your income for one quarter by 25, and that's your benefit. S9 if you earn 32k/yr, that works out to 8000/25 or $320/wk if im reading it correctly. That's not that much money. The extra 600 is crucial.

You misunderstand me. Your employer pays you less to make up for those unemployment insurance payments they make. You don't really think that they'd let their bottom line be affected by something that helps their employees from the kindness of their hearts, do you?

These "employer paid" things are always a scam. In America, your employer "pays half" of your Social Security and Medicare taxes. But actually your paycheck is reduced by these amounts. I feel the same about taxing companies - that income goes to people.

It would be much easier if we just did a VAT and abolished all other forms of taxation. It's automatically progressive (the more you spend the more you pay) and eliminates the need to file taxes for individuals.

VAT, like all sales tax, is actually quite regressive. Poor people spend a higher % of their income on consumption of goods than rich people do. A VAT tax that averages out to say 15% on goods means that someone who earns $25k/year and saves none of it has a 15% effective tax rate, while a person who earns $100k/year and saves 20% of it has a .8*.15 = 12% effective tax rate.
