Yes from ancestry.com. They had a sale where it was like half off or something. If you are curious about your history you should do one!

There's nothing interesting about my history, I'm 100% indian Punjabi. That and I'm sketched out by having my DNA in a database owned by a corporation who can do whatever they want with it. I don't trust them.
In the future, maybe health insurance companies will test your DNA and refuse to insure you (or charge you much more) if you have certain markers. Not to mention cops/government...cold cases have been solved by familial DNA.

Those are all fair points. You are giving up a fair amount of personal information just so you can look at a colorful map twice a year. I'm glad I did it I guess but I can totally see not doing it.

Were you at all uncertain about your background? I guess it gives you more specific regions than you may have known before.
I can totally see people wanting to do it if they are curious/unsure about their backgrounds...or if they're looking for family members. There's just no appeal to me because I know my family members and my background.

What do the different colors and overlapping regions mean? I first thought it meant you were more Lithuanian (like mixed European Jewish, but more Lithuanian than any other region) but now I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it right ?

I was merely apathetic before, I don't really care to spend a good chunk of money just to find out I'm 0.4% arabic or whatever. I know my immediate family heritage and don't really care to know much more.
But your post made me think it might actually be an actively smart choice. I don't really like how modern technology/the internet sometimes invades your privacy and profiles you, and DNA might be another way to do that. Nobody needs my DNA tbh. I'll keep it to myself.

Although, your 100% comment was interesting. I once randomly watched a YouTube video of some guys having one if these tests done. One of them was completely convinced that he was 100% Korean, nothing else in there... But he came out like 20% Japanese.
Not to say you're wrong, of course. Your genes might really be 100% from just that region, but I also think it's quite easy for foreign DNA to sneak in, since all it really takes is one obscure ancestor having a foreign partner at some point.
Regardless, moot point since you're not doing one of those tests anyway. Just an interesting thought.

Good point, actually.
I'm assuming since my family is fairly traditional - as are most people from that region, I believe. It isn't encouraged to date outside your caste. But you're right, it is absolutely possible that I have a rebellious ancestor.
It would be cool to find that out. It just isn't worth the potential downsides to me.

Yeah, it's a very disturbing thought. You just need to look at how companies like Facebook and Cambridge Analytica can and do harvest people's online data to profile and manipulate them. It's very insidious.
I don't think the technology is quite there yet, but I think it's absolutely plausible that corporations and questionable groups would abuse access to people's DNA. Your example of health insurance companies was a good one.
I hope that laws are put in place to regulate that kind of stuff if it does get to that point.

Me too. Even if the appropriate laws are passed, though, I'm skeptical of how well they will be enforced. Just look at Experian's data breach and the resulting consequences...or lack thereof.
