Topic: CSGO skins reflect a diseased and unnatural market.

Anonymous A started this discussion 5 years ago #101,297

CSGO skins are what you can win or buy from steam, like the word applies, its skin on something that already exists within the game, almost only weapons, and is purely aesthetic.
You would think then, that a value of skins would be determined on how cool/beautiful they are but instead it seems (to me anyway) that the only thing making them valuable
is that they are rare and that is a mind fuck to me. I am at a loss ford words really.

Wait until you find out about capitalism as a whole.

Also thanks for reminding me of that economy crash TF2 had, where people could just unbox easy unusuals, and the dude who had the most valuable backpack in TF2 had its value drop immensely. At least CS:GO has the stability.

Rarity always dictates value in these types of gaems.

Yeah the steam market seems totally reliant on whatever valve decides to do. Yet still there are people out there thinking they can make a buck or more from skins by trading and
investing in the items but i think most people lose money when they try that.

There is a catch though, the higher the price the more beautiful it automatically becomes to people. Absurd world this csgo market.

Scarcity (natural and artificial) is a factor in determining prices. This is not unique to vidyas.

Yeah, skins trading and stuff is kind of a racket but back when TF2 used to update there was actually a decent chunk of money to be made, I made a solid $50 off of reselling crates from the Invasion community update.

Nevertheless, the skins market seems like a different beast. I have no idea how art in itself becomes valuable but
i bet it does not start so by being limited in supply, anyone can paint and draw but it will take skills to have a high demand for what you create.
In csgo, valve decides on its own what will be rare and you could compare it to a artist who decides on how much of which art should be printed or
which artistic series should have more of it than others, i would assume though that his art that is considered the best would automatically become
rare and overtake the price of other art from him despite the other art being more rare. With csgo, it does not seem to be the case, which is weird.

Makes sense, crates/cases seem to be slowly gaining value over time. Strange since most of the items in them seem to be losing value over time, might be wrong since i was wrong about the cases.

Yeah, most of the items listed in crates are trash-tier, but the crates that go for big bucks have earlier unusual generations, which can go for a lot of money. Even on flop 1st gen unusuals you can usually break even with a good hat. So the expensive crates will get opened, and if it doesn't have the funny hat in there, the items get sold to bots on the cheap, devaluing them even more.
