Hello, forumites! So, this topic is mostly for me rather than for the rest of the fora. Basically, I'm going to document my Warhammer 40K painting and modelling in here, aiming to post something 40K-related I did once per day. By "publicly" pledging to do this, I'm trying to benefit from the Rule of Commitment, so I'll feel a sense of obligation to work on my 40K stuff. Hopefully, this'll become a routine for me and I'll, in the not-too distant future, be able to get my army fully painted and start playing games with them.
But still, feel free to discuss 40K things in here or to ask me any relevant questions.

Some introduction-y stuff to get started: here's my desk that I use for 40K stuff. Normally there's newspaper on it to keep it clean, but I took this as I was changing it.

Here's one of the soldiers from my army, fully painted (base aside). The first of many!
I spent a while quite neurotically agonising over what paint scheme to use, the lore implications of it, would it look good... But in the end I just decided to go with a slight adjustment to the colour scheme I used when I painted them a few years ago.
I should note, I'm not that good at taking photos. I actually had to Google how to take decent pictures of 40K models before making this topic, haha. So bear with me on that.

Good question! Sadly, Games Workshop (the company behind 40K) is very loose with handing out the 40K license, so a lot of 40K video games are kinda basic and low-quality. But, off the top of my head, some good ones are:
- The Dawn of War series are RTS games (though the third one has MOBA elements). Generally considered to be the best 40K games.
- Battlefleet Gothic 1 and 2 are meant to be quite good, but I'm not into space combat games.
- Space Marine, the video game, is great third-person shooter game. Think Gears of War, but instead of taking cover you shred enemies with a chainsword to regain health. I had fun with it when I played it.
I think there's some other decent ones out there, but nothing I know much about. The lack of high-quality 40K video games is really disappointing.

One more introduction-y thing, I thought I'd introduce the 40K army I collect. The Sisters of Battle, also known as the Adepta Sororitas.
You may have seen me drunkenly posting about them before, but here's a sober and quick rundown on them:
They're an all-female army who wear power armour, and can use their faith in the God-Emperor to empower themselves in battle. Think nuns with guns, or an army of Joan of Arcs.
I think they're pretty cool because, in 40K's very dark setting with things like demons, killer robots, and huge genetically-engineered soldiers, the Sisters are elite but ultimately normal soldiers who are able to hold their own with sheer, unwavering faith and belief. It feels strange to praise that as an atheist, but in a setting like 40K, humans drawing power from belief is very heroic.
Also, their gothic and religious aesthetic is fucking cool, and some players understandably call them "the most 40K army in 40K". To give some examples, one of their units is a floating pulpit with huge flamethrowers mounted on it. Another is a pipe organ thank that fires missiles.

Also, for decades they were heavily neglected by Games Workshop, having old models made of metal instead of the more modern and superior plastic models. They were also generally ignored when new rules came out, and by the authors at GW's fiction wing Black Library.
But, in 2018, Games Workshop did a survey asking players what they wanted to see, and the Sisters received overwhelming support. Due to this, they received fully-updated models and now get a lot of attention from the company as a whole.
I don't think I'm conveying it very well but basically, IRL, they have a nice story of being extreme underdogs who eventually came out on top.

Today's work: quick touch-up of a missionary model I painted a few years ago. I just repainted his chainsword from the garish white it was. Thought about painting it red, but decided on green to help to visually distinguish him from the Sisters, since he's not from the same arm of the church as them.

Small aside, I'm not that good at painting (yet). I tend to lay the paint on a little thick, which is a common issue for new painters. But I'm not too worried about it. I'd like to improve, but ultimately I'm fine with just getting my models to "tabletop standard".
But some 40k painters are insanely skilled and can make some really amazing stuff. Pic related.

I dunno, I think a lot of 40K players are quite chill and normal. But, like a lot of nerdy hobbies, there's definitely some quite weird and maladjusted people in there too. Tabletop gamers even have a term for especially weird or unlikable people in the hobby: "that guy".
Tbh, I think it's luck of the draw whether your local tabletop scene is good or not. But often there'll be a few different places you can go to play 40k, if you're somewhere reasonably populated.

Unfortunately little progress on the Sister today, as I went to visit some family.
I thought of something cool for the augmetic arm, though. I'll put a little transfer onto the back of the hand. That's the blue sheet thing in the picture. Basically, you cut out a symbol, make it wet, and paste it onto the model. It's pretty neat. But it also requires special paints to be applied, which I don't currently have, so this poor Sister shall have to do without arms for some time. But I hope to grant her a head tomorrow.

Sadly little painting done today, as I went out for a while.
Here is a cameo appearance of the Celestian Superior's head. I used something called contrast paints for it. Basically, it's a relatively new Games Workshop paint that automatically goes into recessed areas of a model, giving an impression of depth and light without having to use multiple layers of paint.
Wasn't satisfied with how it came out, though. Her head looks kinda orange and weird. I think that generally contrast paint is considered a bit tricky to use despite its supposed convenience, so I'm not surprised I'm having a little trouble. Will try again soon with a slightly different colour.

I'd say that plastic is superior for miniatures in every way tbh. It's much easier for companies to design, add detail to, and to mass-produce. Meanwhile, the people who buy them will get more assembly options and it's a much easier material to work with.
I think the only pro-lead or metal argument I've seen is that the models have a "satisfying weight" when you lift them. I suppose that's true, but it doesn't really matter.

As hobbies go it's fairly expensive, tbh. A squad of Space Marines costs $49. The ones I'm assembling now, Battle Sisters, cost $60. And then you've still got the costs of things like paint and brushes on top of the pricey models.
I don't mind, though. I have a decent enough income.
@1,146,761 (chill dog !!81dzJNNYL)
Basically, players take turns, with different phases dedicated to moving, shooting, melee, and psychic powers. A lot of this is done with dice, like with you needing to roll a certain number or better to successfully hit an enemy model.
A decent 40k board looks something like this.

Big blobs aren't much of an issue if you don't use much paint and mix water with the paint you do put on the brush.

When their models were first designed in like the 80s or 90s, the sculptors might've been trying to get across their being "the female army". But that's just an assumption on my part.
Some people think it's a bit silly, which is fair enough, but I think it fits well with their strong, over the top gothic look. This is an army that also has pipe organ tanks, braziers everywhere, and assault mechs that double as torture racks for the pilot. So ornate, exaggerated armour is perfect for them.

Sometimes. The Battle Sisters box builds 10 models, so that's $6 per model. Though there's also extra parts left over, which can be useful.

There's a bit of that. Generally, the models for "leader" units will cost more proportionally.
The Canoness kit, which builds only one model, costs $35.

It's not just a matter of just gluing them together, by the way. If you want the models to look half-decent, you have to use a tool like this to remove the mould lines.
Quite happy with the results. I sometimes applied too much pressure with the Celestians and took too much off, but I'm achieving a very smooth finish on the Repentia.

The Repentia, by the way, are a very interesting unit. To summarise, they are Sisters who have failed in some way and have consequently been stripped of their weapons and armour and given huge chainswords instead. They do this entirely willingly, as they feel that they've failed their God-Emperor and that the near-death sentence of being a Repentia is the only way to make things right.
It's generally expected that the Repentia will atone by dying in battle, but it is possible for Sister to survive long enough to be judged to have redeemed themselves, and rejoin the ranks again.
I like them because it's fucking cool that they're crazed zealots with death wishes, charging at things like tanks and giant monsters with only huge chainswords and no armour. They do a lot of damage if they connect, too, those chainswords are very damaging.
Also, my Minor Order gets buffs to their close combat attacks, which the Repentia obviously benefit from.

As opposed to the last two, these were a bit tricky. Couldn't quite glue their legs on right, so I'm having to use a modelling epoxy to fill in some gaps. It seems to be working okay, though.

One more Repentia assembled, with two more partially assembled. Only two more remaining now, along with the Repentia Superior. No picture as it's just more of the same.
Quite pleased with this thread. It has fulfilled its purpose of making me do 40k stuff on a daily basis. Even though I'm some ways off from having a playable army, I'll get there eventually as long as I keep at it.

Progress on the Repentia is going more slowly now. Apparently the later models are more challenging. Legs aren't quite attaching properly, mould line removals are getting trickier. Will have to take time to make repairs using green stuff before I proceed.
Did an interesting workaround tonight. I unfortunately took a chunk out of a bicep while trying to remove some sprue remnant. Had an idea to conceal it by making an armband that goes around the bicep. Seems to fit in with the model well enough. Haven't yet decided what colour to paint it, though.

I can't give a straightforward answer, since GW is awkward and you can buy some Poxwalkers on their own, but then 10 more with different designs are exclusive to a starter box which includes other models.
The 6 are only $15, but I got the other 10 on their own off of Ebay. Don't remember how much I paid, but I was a reasonable price, IIRC.

Very challenging night so far. I tried using a contrast paint, and it went poorly.
As a quick explanation, contrast paints are a relatively new product by Games Workshop. The idea is that you can lay down one coat of this over your basecoat paint, and it will add colour while being darker in recessed areas, giving an impression of depth and shadow. The big advantage here is that it's quicker than the traditional method. A big selling point for me since, as you've likely noticed, I'm not exactly churning them out.
Anyway, as you can see, it came out very streaky...
Killer Lettuce? !HonkUK.BIE (OP) double-posted this 5 years ago, 2 minutes later, 3 weeks after the original post[^][v]#1,150,023
...However, I googled advice on how to use contrast paints, and tried again on a leftover arm. Much better result here, with the paint going on evenly and pooling correctly in the recessed areas.
Very important to get this right on the Repentia, as they have muscular arms and legs, so I really want someting that can highlight those recessed areas to portray that.
As an aside, the splotchy effect actually works kinda well on my Poxwalkers, since it makes them look slightly inhuman.

Great progress today. Fully painted the Simulacrum, quite happy with the outcome. The stone on the the statue is especially a relief, as I wasn't sure that this would result in something evocative of "old-looking stone".

Something fun I could mention: one of my new co-workers used to manage a Warhammer store. He's told me a bit about it, apparently one of the skills they have to learn is to stop the store atmosphere becoming "clique-y" (as he put it). As @1,143,006 (B) mentioned, this can be an issue. It was interesting, it never occurred to me that creating a good atmosphere was a part of that job, but it seems obvious now.
He also mentioned, and I thought this was quite funny, that he had to "train" his staff to make normal small talk when a woman entered the store instead of getting nervous. And apparently some of his regular male customers weren't entirely comfortable either. I know nerdy hobbies attract awkward sorts, but still...
Anyway, he's not doing that job now, obviously. He said that he eventually quit because he felt guilty convincing kids to spend their pocket money on pricey models.

Mostly just thought about basing today. In the olden days, this was done by covering the base in PVA glue, dragging it around in a container full of sand, then painting over it when it dried. That's what I did on the base on the right, years ago.
These days, GW sells pots that you can just paint onto the base to get a similar effect (after drybrushing). I played around with some a bit tonight on the base on the left, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the colour I'm getting, I'm not sure it will match the colour scheme of my Sisters. Further research is needed.

The Sisters have an interesting quirk where, in the past, their models ignored the usual sci-fi trope of "generic soldiers have helmets' important ones don't". Instead, most of them didn't have helmets, while sometimes the squad's officer was the one of the few who got a helmet. I assume this was done to show off their being the female army, but that's just an assumption on my part.
Anyway, the new plastic kits give you the option to assemble every Sister with a helmet if you want, but I might have my Battle Sisters all not wearing helmets as a small nod to that.
