Topic: I understand the chicken-cross-the-road joke now
Sheila LaBoof started this discussion 5 years ago#101,191
You know the one:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
When I first heard that, I didn't understand why it was supposed to be funny. I now understand: it is not supposed to be funny. It is a mechanism to make you the butt of the joke. You were expecting something funny. Instead, you get a simple answer that is obviously true but not funny. The joke is that you are stupid. No wonder the joke pissed me off. The joke teller is really telling you this:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
Fuck you, I'm not even telling a joke.

It’s anti-humor. And also the existence of it has spawned other jokes that only work if you are familiar with the original one. Such as: > Why did the duck cross the road? > To prove he's no chicken

It's a really mean-spirited joke.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side, stupid.

@previous (Sheila LaBoof)
Nah bruv, it’s funny because it’s unexpected the first time you hear it. The human brain enjoys surprises, because it thinks that means it has learned something new. And in a way it has. But that thing shouldn’t be to think someone is being mean (unless of course they really were). Maybe the person that told the joke to you was being mean, but the joke itself is not mean. I don’t know the person that told you the joke so I don’t know if they were being mean or not. There are certainly a lot of meanies out there. But at the end of the day, if they are mean it’s better to stay away from those people, and focus on the people that are not being mean.

I mean the inventor of the joke had ill intent
I didn't find the joke funny when I heard it because I didn't get where the funny part was hiding
