Topic: UKEnglish, is this true??? (not a "washing up liquid" post per se)

Apocalypse Indy™ !bYobIzYIFE started this discussion 5 years ago #101,184

Please tell me this is a silly rumor that is not true. I have heard that, when you wash dishes (yes, with washing up liquid), you wet them, then scrub them with soap, then just put then to dry without rinsing the soap off of them! That cannot be true, can it?

British English schtick.

> rinsing the soap off of them!

Why do Americans say "off of" when "off" is all that's needed?

Linguistic quirk. Could someone please answer?
@1,142,415 (Killer Lettuce? !HonkUK.BIE)
Actually, I heard that years ago, and always wondered if it were true. I have always wanted to know.

No. That's ridiculous.

How can you make such a big deal about British linguistic quirks while so blithely dismissing American linguistic quirks?

Shh. We all know that. I was wondering what absurd justification he would come up with (although he would probably just ignore the question, as always).
It's especially bizarre coming from a self-proclaimed linguistics expert.

You put them in the sudsy water, clean the food off them and put them in the rack to air dry. Some people wipe them with tea towels to dry them.

Why are you washing dishes in dirty water? You probably have it too cold.

If you've got washing up liquid or grease on your plates after washing them, either

A) youre using too much washing up liquid
B) your water is too cold
C) both of above
