Topic: beef jerky is a valuable part of a balanced diet

Anonymous A started this discussion 5 years ago #101,152

Externally hosted imagei love beef jerky but why is it so expensive gawd damn. There can be a almost 300% price variation depending on where you buy it. There is something wrong with that.

Make your own. Marinate beef in soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion powder, and garlic powder. Put it in an oven at 175F until it dries out. Delicious!

Technically that might end up being more expensive when you factor in the rate of error that a inexperienced cook will have and the time he has to put into making it. Time is money man. I think the trick is to buy in bulk.

Look for a cheap food dehydrator. My family used to do it, and it isn't that hard

You do not even need one. An oven on a low temp is the same.

But they use a lot of energy and heat up the house

Ovens are fine if you're just experimenting, but some ovens struggle to maintain such low temperatures, and not all have fans - you need good airflow to dehydrate well. An oven is also more energy-intensive than a dehydrator.
If you live in a low-humidity area you can dehydrate food just using the sun, too!

It's too humid to do that where I live, too. Someone living in, say, Arizona would have a much easier time.

I don't think I could live in the desert. The fear of water scarcity would always get to me. I feel comforted knowing that, whatever happens, I will never die of thirst here.

The creation of desert cities - especially Las Vegas, which wastes so much water so conspicuously - always struck me as incredibly hubristic.

I had it once and I could not convince my friend it wasn't dog food but a typical usamerican delicacy

First time I saw beef jerky I thought the same thing.
Interestingly, even Wikipedia cites beef jerky as being dog food ?

Yes, the dutch for example have Biltong, which they erm..."learned" from being "friends" with South Africans. It's likely other countries/cultures do dried meat better than we do. I personally think jerky tastes awful and never eat it.

I don't like the taste and texture of store bought beef jerky, but enjoyed homemade. Must be because of preservatives

I have come to associate the word "delicacy" with thing you would never even think of eating but some fucked up foreigners decided it was food.

If you raise your kids on difficult foods such as jerky, they'll be more likely to grow powerful jaws that can fit the teeth properly and have straight teeth and room for the wisdom teeth.

Sheila LaBoof replied with this 5 years ago, 10 hours later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,143,001

@previous (A)
hmmm, well if their food was softer than ordinary, that would be a factor. Over time, the inherited ability to grow a larger jaw than anyone else would not make a difference if everyone doesn't stimulate their jaw growth because everyone is eating soft food, and so that ability could possibly be lost altogether if the genes for it haven't helped anyone stand out. It is plausible.
