There's no way $21.99/kg is the usual price of chicken breast, surely? That's £13.

That's the fancy stuff and likely from a fancier grocery store. You can definitely find it much cheaper. However, goceries, especially meat, are generally much more expensive in Canada than in Europe. The cheap food always delights me when I go to Europe.
A whole rotisserie chicken is $10 though.
And please do remember the exchange rate between pounds and Canadian dollars. 1 GBP = 1.70 CAD. That makes a big difference.

$17.14 cad is £10.11. More reasonable.

It's £17.32, right? 29.36 CAD = 17.32 GBP @previous (chill dog !!81dzJNNYL)
It's already converted to GBP from CAD. £17.14 is the pounds, from $29.36 in OP's pic. :p

I think you (at least compared to the UK!) have higher salaries in Canada and generally cheaper rent, which I'm sure evens things out a bit.

I only found out the other day that the UK has some of the cheapest food prices in the western world.

Oh, whoops, my bad. But yeah the stuff in OPs picture is not unheard of but not standard. One of the chain groceries has these massive bags of frozen food (mostly various kinds of meat) for $5 or $10, i normally spring for those.
@1,140,250 (tteh !MemesToDNA)
Rent is rapidly rising though. Vancouver and Toronto are unaffordable already and Montreal is getting there. Vacancy rates are super low, people often get "renovicted" (kicked out so the landlord can renovate and jack up the rent), and condos are popping up more and more. I hate it. My neighborhood is getting gentrified to hell. I liked living in the East end, where it isn't quite so gentrified yet, but it's only a matter of time.
> average rent in Montreal has gone up by 40 per cent in the last five years.
> Profit margins for landlords, meanwhile, have gone up to 24 per cent on average, nearly three times the margin in 2000
> The Quebec Landlords’ Association says the cost of repairs to buildings are to blame for the increase in rent.

Yeah, we have the cheapest food in Western Europe, well below the European average. I think we have one of the most competitive food markets, too.

Posters have popped up in the last couple days with resources for people who haven't found an apartment (July 1st is moving day, when leases usually end/renew) and are now homeless, plus where to go for free meals and boxed lunches

Is there a large tax on meat to make these prices happen?

I don't believe so. Groceries (ingredients for cooking, not pre-prepared meals which are taxed as normal) aren't actually taxed at all.

It's a combination of foreign investors (mostly Chinese), things like AirBnB, and scummy landlords.

when you look at Brazil, you see hovels made out of plywood and corrugated metal sheet roofs at the edges of cities. is that what other places are aspiring to?

I hadn't realised quite how bad it's gotten either but yeah it's nuts. It's way harder to find an apartment now than even a couple years ago. I'm worried that I won't be able to afford to live here in a couple of years.

When I toured the UK with theatre I would hate going north. It was literary like going to another (poorer) country. I think it was Darlington that made me realise how much I hated northern England

It genuinely, unironically is grim. Grey, lifeless and anonymous towns and cities. The Westcountry is where it's at.

I wonder if a lot of Nunavutians (unsure of demonym...) just do the traditional seal and fish diet because it would seem insane to eat a standard Western diet there. I am very thankful I do not live in Nunavut.

Not sure. I have a bud who worked for a professor who did his archaeo work in the arctic and might know, I could ask him if i remember to.
Also i got some polar bear meat from up north once. Was...weird.
