I know the chances are even unlikely now that the virus traded away some of its potency in order to spread quickly, but what purpose do I have in the world really? Are we really saving who need to be saved?

I get where you're coming from but COVID is a shitty, painful way to do it. I'd do helium, myself. It sounds a lot more pleasant than drowning in your own lung fluid.
