Apparently he passed peacefully. I assume he was sleeping. That's unexpected, I knew he was weak but I thought my grandmother would die first (she only has max 5 years-ish left). My poor dad and aunt. My grandma must be so distressed, with her dementia.

Eh I mostly feel bad for my dad anf his sister, who both quit their jobs/retired to take care of their parents, and my grandma who must be so confused and distressed. I rarely see them so it hasn't really hit me yet.

Sorry to hear. :( It's always that bit worse when dementia's involved.
When my grandad died, my grandma (who had Alzheimer's) was convinced he must've "popped down to the pub" and that he'd be back in the evening. The few times care staff tried telling her that he'd died she became hysterical and inconsolable, and inevitably forgot. She carried on thinking he'd be back in the evening until she died. Pretty sad, but at least she was spared the grief, I suppose.

Right? They told her not once, not twice, but on three separate occasions. For no discernible reason except "we felt that she ought to know". Still annoys me thinking about it, and this was well over a decade ago.

I texted my dad I'm home and he can call me whenever he's awake. My grandma I can't really talk to, I've forgotten the language and she doesn't speak English.
@previous (tteh !MemesToDNA)
That's awful. Did they do other awful things? I wonder what my grandma thinks. Apparently she used to get distressed whenever people weren't in the room with her, not sure if she still does that.

It turns out that the dementia my grandmother has (frontotemporal) affects her cognitive function (she has no filter on her emotions, is super impulsive, requires 24/7 caring, and cannot plan anything) but her memory is fine.

Alzheimer's is not the only kind of dementia there is. Different types of dementia affect different parts of the brain. As the disease progresses they start to blend together a bit more. But it's absolutely absurd that you claim to know more about my grandmother's dementia than my father, who's been her caretaker since her diagnosis. She has frontotemporal dementia, not Alzheimer's. Her memory is fine. Her emotional regulation and planning/cognitive function are fucked.

I think they otherwise treated her pretty well, actually. They just seemed to have this insistence for a while that she "should know". @1,139,576 (G)
I'm pretty sure that's a key distinction between Alzheimer's and FTD - early memory loss in the former, but seldom in the latter. All forms of dementia can eventually impact memory (I think?) but some spare it until the very, very end stages (if it's impacted at all). But I'm no expert on this by any means.

Life is just a kindergarten. Things upset us and we take them too seriously much like children but in the end it is nothing in scale as we thought it was. I'm sure your grandad had a good and long life, but sorry nevertheless.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Having two living grandparents and one living step-grandparent (all of whom are in bad health, my mom is living with her mom and stepdad and apparently is stopping them from taking their medications. Someone had to step in and take them to the hospital. God, that's so fucked up) makes me a lightweight? What is your problem?
@1,139,834 (G)
Nope, I'm clean. I know it may be hard for you to fathom, but some people know how to have safe sex. My only physical health issue is risk of developing tendinitis, for which I wear wrist wraps when working. Also cat allergies, which stressed out my immune system so I'm getting my own place. Mental health issues are PTSD, major depressive disorder, panic attack disorder/general anxiety, and ADHD. Unlike you, however, I don't use my mental health issues as an excuse to be a layabout.

Yeah I'm glad you understand. I saw them summers and Christmasses growing up but it's been a few years since I last went up. Decided I'd finally go visit this year and...welp. My dad called and said that if quarantine restrictions lift he'll send me a ticket to attend the funeral this Friday but that's very unlikely.

I am so sorry for your loss. My Mum died in September very unexpectedly. It hit my Dad & I very hard. Now I take care of my Dad. His memory seems to be going...he is still sharp...I hope it's just grief & being overwhelmed with everything we have to do... I know how hard loss can be it does get easier.

I thought you were against insulting a poster's dead relatives/loved ones? I guess not. In that case, your dad was a filthy disease-ridden slut who begged for my cock in his asshole. He wanted me to give it to him raw, said he loved feeling the cum and blood gush out, but i always refused because I didn't want his diseases. When I was done with him he liked to talk about how his son is a failure and a disappointment. He feared that you would move in and take advantage of your mother after his death. Prescient man. Clearly he didn't care for her much either though, judging by how bad he wanted my cock.
