I don't see why people like it, it's so overrated. The writing is terrible, there is no character development and it's boring. If Jimmy is such a good lawyer, why isn't he a judge yet? There's not a lot of action either except boring lawyer stuff. "I have a case blah blah".

But when does he become a judge?

I forget when it is, since I binged the first three seasons all at once so they kind of blend together, there's things like the part where Jimmy relapses into being a con man full-time with his friend Marco where the scene starts with him facing left in-frame, there's an exchange with a fake JFK coin, where he discusses how JFK facing left on the coin symbolized the past, and this couldn't stand, so the production was hijacked to make him face right, towards the American future. After Marco dies, he returns to his lawyer job and the scene direction has him moving right. During that scene, where he returns to his lawyer work with the motivation to make money in a way that he didn't have before, he's also humming the main riff from Smoke on the Water, and by the time season 5 comes around, when he's deep in the cartel life, making beaucoux bucks as a bagman for Lalo, he's playing that same riff on the guitar, instead of just humming it.
There's plenty of really strong character work, and the show doesn't forget shit, it's just not as deeply bombastic and borderline cartoonish as Breaking Bad was.
