I skipped learning a second language and decided to learn my fourth language instead.

I know maybe a half dozen words of hebrew but I don't speak it. I don't know the grammar or the tenses or anything.

As an actual linguist with an MA in languages and who knows several foreign languages, it is my informed opinion is that it is best to first start just imitating native speakers saying things. While you do that, you can do some review of the phonics, but it will be quicker if you just trust the natives and do what they do. Once you can hold a basic conversation from repetition, then start studying grammar.

Hebrew has no verb tenses. It has two verb states (perfect and imperfect), each of which has several sub-categories.

Languages =/= linguistics. If you were a linguist you would have an MA in linguistics.

That's Biblical Hebrew you retard. Modern Hebrew has verb tenses.

Thy are not considered tenses, but states. Also, Indy knows more about language acquisition than anyonebhere by magnitudes.

They are verb tenses Matt. No amount of sockpuppet UIDs will change the fact that modern Hebrew has verb tenses.

I learnt English largely from TV shows and films and from there gradually built up my fluency by reading abridged works of literature. With that said, I was 'fortunate' in that English is probably the easiest 2nd language to learn due to its ubiquity in global culture. The method you should use, OP, depends I suppose on which language you are hoping to learn. I don't suppose there is one 'best' method that covers all of, say, English, Hungarian (notoriously difficult), Latin, Aramaic, Gujarati, etc.
Good luck to you!

This is actually solid advice, that's how I picked up Polish very quickly when I moved there. Once you get the hang of it, my advice is to sign up for some proper lessons and learn spelling/grammar.
All in all, emerge yourself into the language you wanna learn, if you don't have access to local people, find some shows in the language you wanna learn. I'm watching Solsidan now while learning Swedish.
