It's an anime cliche. It's usually played for laughs, with one character being aloof or annoyed with another, but also with signs that they secretly like the other character.
But I don't think it really works outside of anime land, and would indeed probably be abuse. Normal 3D humans don't tend to mistreat people they like.

No, it’s not Bert (lol), this guy still isn’t that much of a piece of shit. And we’re not like dating or anything because we both know it wouldn’t work out given that I’m part of a certain marginalized group and he tends to be bigoted. We’re just friends and I think I might be his only friend at this point after all of his other friends blocked him. One of his long time friends, when asked why, told me there was nothing personal against him but you can only endure someone being a good guy one moment and then a drunken piece of shit the next. I still remember a voice call I had with him that sounded like he was DROWNING in a SEA OF ALUMINUM cans. His friend is worried about him and so am I. Though his friend moved on and sort of forgotten about him. Me? He still gave me and lead me to some pretty high points in my life so I sort of owe him friendship.

I think this guy does having feelings for me (he’s expressed it many times both sober and drunk) so that’s why I’ve always been mice to him. I don’t want to hurt him but the alcohol might have numbed him. He also hates cops but not for any of the, err, more practical reasons right now. He spent time in jail before.
