A man lost his temper with staff at a Home Bargains store after they refused to refund him for Bombay mix which he claims is "excruciatingly hot" and had burned his mouth.

John Wood, 75, and his wife recently ventured out to Home Bargains in Saltash, after John had been shielding for weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak due to underlying health conditions, and happened to pick up a packet of Bombay mix for himself and his wife's 94-year-old father to enjoy.

John says the savoury snack was "extremely and excruciatingly hot", and "far beyond" anything he'd ever eaten.

Mr Wood felt the need to clarify that he'd eaten "hot curries" in his time, and liked spicy food generally, but that this was far hotter than anything he'd had before, and that it had burnt his mouth - having only eaten a very small amount of the Bombay mix.

To make sure it wasn't just his taste buds betraying him, John asked his wife to test the Bombay mix as well. John's wife reacted similarly, rushing to the kitchen to get a glass of water because the Bombay mix had "burnt her mouth and tongue."

Feeling that the Bombay mix was so hot there had to be something wrong with it, John decided to call Home Bargains to let them know about the "faulty" product, and arrange a refund, before other customers experienced similar issues.

John said that a member of Home Bargains told him they would flag it and report to the manager of the store, but that a refund couldn't be issued, because he had already opened the packet.

John said he's ashamed to say that he "lost his temper" and was "rude" on the phone to the Home Bargains staff, and feels regret for getting angry.

He added that everything going on in the world at the moment had probably got to him, as it isn't like him to lose his temper.

John said: "To be honest with you, I'm a bit ashamed to say that I lost my temper, and I shouted down the phone, and eventually hung up."

Home Bargains told Mr Wood that they had received no other complaints about the product being too spicy, and that they wouldn't accept a refund due to the fact that the packet does use the word "spicy" in its description, and because John had already opened it, it couldn't be returned.

John said he argued that although the packaging does describe the product as spicy, there was no warning of the degree of heat.

Mr Wood said that the Bombay mix was so spicy that he and his wife had decided that it would be "too dangerous" to give the mixture to his wife's 94-year-old father, fearing that it may make him "very ill."

John admitted to us that although he regrets losing his temper, he feels that the store should have acknowledged his complaint about the fiery Bombay mix, and he feels that something "should be done."

Who buys spicy food at the store and then complains because it's too spicy??? Must be a slow news day though.

Is Bombay mix cultural appropriation? Because that's problematic!

Then only Indians can eat it, obviously. Anything else is cultural appropriation

Fairly, so I imagine the spicy variant would be quite hot.

Can't stand bombay mix tbh. Eat something that actually tastes good like ready salted crisps (salt and vinegar is too spicy).
