Topic: Thought experiment: suppose that immediately after the George Floyd killing (like within 15 minutes)

Meta !Sober//iZs started this discussion 5 years ago #100,703

Officer Chauvin was publicly executed by the mayor in front of Minneapolis city hall. No trial, no appeals, nothing, just immediately executed by Mayor Jacob Frey with a shot to the back of the head.

Would this have prevented the riots and looting?

No because the issue isn't that one cop one time did something bad. It wouldn't address the underlying systemic problems with policing.

You mean do to him what he did to George? Seems fair to me.

Would it at least have prevented riots in the city of Minneapolis?

It may have blunted some of them but the problems black Minneapolis citizens had with the cops did not begin or end with the one time Derek Chauvin and his 3 cop buddies murdered George Floyd.

It would show Mayor Frey is taking swift action (assume he does this for any future Floyd-style events). BLMs terms are "no justice, no peace" so what amount of justice would be necessary to get peace?

By justice, they do not mean revenge, but reform and equality.

Symbolic acts of justice are not going to be sufficient. It'll be the 3 R's: Reform (or Abolition depending on how radical the populace is), Reinvestment, and Reparations. Substantive police reform, combined with city/state budget reforms for massive capital investment in minority schools and communities, and compensation for the brutality suffered at the hands of police officers for decades (and also like, segregation, slavery, etc.). There is a certain tendency in American politics to prefer solutions that look nice or generate good press, but cost little money and require no serious change to the underlying system. That is going to be insufficient in this case.
