My problem with the Jane's Addiction song "Been Caught Stealing" is the blatant misuse of the present perfect verb state. "I've been caught stealing" is clearly in the present perfect, but then the act of theft is specified as "once, when I was five." That makes it a one-time action completed in the past, the very definitive use of the preterite! It should be, "I was caught stealing once when I was five."
