My call: Totally justified use of force.

The call to fire the cop was a total pussy move.

I don't agree with shooting someone in the back, but he was intoxicated while driving and resisted arrest

That doesn't seem like it should warrant a death sentence. Without a trial, no less.

He did go for the police taser, which might invite death? But I still don't agree with him getting shot in the back

I do think that if you need to pass out in your car in the Wendy's parking lot, it may be safer, as a black man, to get in the backseat and not invite extra charges when the police are eventually called on you. At least he wasn't actively driving while intoxicated when the police arrived, based on the limited coverage I have seen

Attacking the police comes with a death sentence. So does jumping in front of a truck.

That's not how it should be. responding to an attack with excessive force leading to death results in a manslaughter charge and a jail sentence for normal people, why not cops?

Seriously. Why do cops get to use excessive force but normal people don't?

Most UKEnglish cops don't carry guns, and seem to have no problem dealing with "violent filth" w/o shooting them. The ones that do carry guns receive special training.

Sounds like the solution is banning guns in the US.

if a cop has to use force here they are automatically suspected of a criminal offense here. except they are currently passing a law to remove that.

it passed parlement but not the senate. only one (3 seat) party voted against it. i dont think it received any media attention, but i did sign a petition so it probably will be fine

I hope that doesn't pass. Do you find that attitudes towards the police are shifting in NL? If so, which way?

dw replied with this 5 years ago, 53 minutes later, 5 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,134,684

@previous (chill dog !!81dzJNNYL)

It probably will pass, I don't necessarily think it will lead to more police brutality, since if there is cause there will still be investigations. I think (white) people here are starting to realise how big of a deal ethnic profiling is, but there aren't the kinds of anti-cop sentiments like in the US.
Ethnic profiling doesn't seem to be a bigger problem with police than any other job, and police admit that it happens and seem interested in fixing it.

Oh, also the tax service recently admitted (after a year of denying it) to auditing people with second nationalities much more than those without, which is illegal obviously.

If the police are so great, why don't you join them? We'd all stop making fun of you for being an unemployed wastoid and you'd be right at home amongst a group of violent racists who take out their untreated anger problems on women and people of color. It's also completely legal for police to rape people in their custody and well, we all know about your tenuous relationship to consent, it's almost as tenuous as your relationship with reality.

He makes a good point. You'll no longer be an unemployed mooch. The police prefer hiring people with low IQs and little schooling, so you'll be right at home. And you'll get power to abuse people with no accountability, which we all know will make you feel good. You also hate minorities and criminals (despite being one yourself) and have tendencies towards violence and rape, so you'll be right at home! Why don't you go for it?

@1,134,684 (dw)
Interesting. I like getting insight into police attitudes in other countries. It's certainly very different.

Ugh. The guy I have a restraining order against is allowed to move into the same building as me and they won't do anything. But I get pulled over because I have a guy in the backseat and they want to make sure it's not him, so I have to sit there for half an hour while they run everyone's names. And there's no way to stop them from doing it until the restraining order ends. So he can live his life fine but I get harassed? Fuck this. Fucking pigs.
