...but only veterans, the poor and the old can use it. Literally only the highest risk citizens may make use of it, while the healthy young majority must make do with private healthcare. How ass backwards is that?! It would probably only be a bit more expensive to let everyone else have it.

Higher taxes, long waiting lists, substandard care, a low paid Doctor dumping ground, lack of medicine choice and availability, unionized Doctors on strike, and the inability to sue for malpractice for all!
People who want adequate health care have health insurance in countries with a "free" health service.

Why double pay for healthcare? We already pay for universal healthcare for us citizens but we don't get it because it would be slightly pricier and would put lots of nonprofits out of charity.
