I don't think that quite happened, though. As I understand, he wanted to keep the 'Spoons open during COVID (because he is a rugged Brexiteer man who doesn't want a nanny state), and he told his staff to "get jobs at Tesco" if they didn't like it. But then, obviously, his had was forced by the lockdown.

He told staff to get other jobs after thr pubs were closed down because he wasn't prepared to pay them a regular wage. He wanted the government to pay people directly instead of the company paying, "and they'll probably be slow about it", so people should go and work for Tesco if they want to get any income over the lockdown.
Later they coincidentally changed their mind when the scheme was introduced that the government refunds employers instead of paying employees.

Not true. He told his staff that if they decided to go work for tesco who desperately needed staff it was their choise and he would hold their job for them.
