Please help
I'd like a pretty, fantasy sounding name that evokes the ocean and waterfalls.
I am bad at this! I was thinking maybe something like Rivendale

Don't, it's a terrible idea. I named mine Mark Isle because I was impatient and couldn't think of a good name. Don't make the same mistake. Make it a good name.

At the beginning I dont think you can do too much wrong. Save any iron nuggets you find. There's an important event that requires a lot of them. Hit rocks with a shovel to get resources without destroying rocks using this strategy: https://youtu.be/cBPOWApBzg0
Do that every day on each rock in your town. Shaking trees after the fruit has fallen off can give you sticks if you need some. Also be aware that metal tools can permanently chop down trees, destroy rocks, etc..
Beyond that just enjoy!

Do I need to pay for a monthly service to play this game?

No. You may need to pay for Nintendo's online service if you want to visit your friends' Islands, im not sure. But to just play the game you do not need anything else.

You do need the online service, but it's $20/y which is extremely cheap.

Hey this video is not about not destroying rocks, but how to make holes so you won't jump back when hitting the rock

Yes! you're gonna want to hit each rock 8 times every day and this is the only way to do it. Sorry if that was confusing.
