I still think that's more of a patch for sloppy mixing. If the mix sounds good on cheap (but decent) headphones, it will sound good on equipment that costs thousands of dollars. It's something my Dad taught me years ago and I still hear it happen again and again. It's why people still use the Yamaha NS10 speakers when they mix down recordings. It sounds harsh and like shit, but it makes mixes sound right because once it sounds nice on those, it's all set for everything else.
