European production.
How is this possable? Do Nissan not know the UK voted to leave? How is this possable? The brexit vote was good Vs evil and evil is winning. I am literally shaking as I type this, shaking and crying.

Britain has no trade deal with Japan, and the British govt published it's WTO tariffs earlier this month saying imported cars will have a 10% tariff.
So it makes sense for Nissan to keep it's plant at Sunderland and make cars for the British market (they have said they'll make Renaults and Mitsibishis as well at that plant for the British market to avoid tariffs incurred by importing from the EU and Japan).
Spain sadly is the victim of the EU-Japan trade deal that removed tariffs on cars. Nissan no longer needs a plant in the EU because they can now export directly from Japan.
BTW, the people of Sunderland got a lot of abuse for voting for Brexit - lots of people called them "stupid". They weren't stupid at all. Unlike the commentariat they had been keeping a close eye on the EU-Japan trade deal and knew it would mean the end for their plant - unless they were able to get the UK out of the EU. They were presented with their chance in the 2016 ref and grabbed it with both hands. It was a vote for self-interest as are all votes.

Brexit is a success even if it causes a shrinking economy and diminished presence on the world stage while providing zero of the alleged benefits promised by the hucksters and morons who campaigned for it

Car manufacturing in the UK has declined basically every year since Brexit and is going to crater with the coronavirus crisis. The Honda plant in Swindon is closing next year. The UK isn't getting a brand new factory, they are just going to produce more at the already existing one. This is at best a mixed bag. Not sure this is the zinger of the point you thought it was.

We might be losing overall, but it's still a win. Somehow. Thanks.

Thanks. @previous (Erik !AltRitexT6)
Yes, which is why painting one plant in the UK not closing as a brexit-inspired win is...weak. It's not like the UK is substantially exceeding expectations or anything.

They're shutting down a plant, they're not moving it to the UK. Read the articles you post

@1,131,052 (blom) > This is not the first time that Nissan has pleaded with UK and EU negotiators to ensure that the 70% of cars manufactured at Sunderland which are sold in the EU can avoid tariffs of 10% under World Trade Organisation rules - the legal default position if a deal is not struck.
Wait svet told me these tarrifs were the reason the plant in the UK was kept, and that the press was too stupid to realize this fact, while people in the city knew the WTO tarrif rates for automobiles and calculated correctly that those would be beneficial for the town rather than joining the FTA.
