Externally hosted imageEuro millions. Too bad the ticket cost £2.50 but a win is still a win even though I lose overall

And that's another thing I hate about Europe. The term "Euro" it just sounds really gay

Why do English people think they don't live in Europe??

Well, English people invented Europe so they can do whatever they want.

Okay, actually, the closest to this I've heard is how we sometimes refer to "continental Europe", which while technically accurate can of course sometimes carry some implications of separation and otherness. Though it also implies that we, the UK, are European too.

I don't think that many Brits would argue that we're not in the geographic area of Europe. But it gets a bit more contentious when you start talking about the UK having cultural or political bonds to the rest of Europe. I guess the assorted grumbling over all of that could sound like a denial of us not being in Europe, but I don't think it is.

@1,129,362 (dw)
I never said it didn't, dreamworks, I just said that culture and politics were contentious topics, and debate around that might sound like denialism that we're in Europe.

@previous (dw)
It varies, the context is important. If the conversation is more about international affairs or history, then we'd say "Europe" to mean all of us. If it was more about Brexit politics or going on holiday, we'd say Europe to mean continental Europe, but that's not a denial that we're European ourselves.

dw, I think you're taking it too literally. When a British perosn refers to "Europe", it's just a quick way to refer to the rest of Europe. It's not a denial of the UK's shared geography or history or culture with the rest of Europe.

Cyprus, Iceland and Malta are also islands. That's irrelevant to whether they're in Europe.
