It's almost like if the people feel the rule of law doesn't apply, then they don't respect it. Once you shatter that illusion that keeps us all civil, people rebel against any perceived injustice because they have no faith that it will be settled any other way at any other time. If you think the police are no better or no more principled than a street gang at keeping order, then what's the harm in letting street gangs keep order?

I don't know. What would you do in a lawless society? If everything suddenly turned upside down and you thought that your chances at survival in the short term hinged on grabbing anything you could to trade or barter? That's kind of what this is isn't it? We saw it in LA and Watts during those riots. We saw it after Hurricane Katrina. I don't think I condone these people's actions, but I think might understand it. It's not so different from hoarding hand sanitizer, ammo, and food buckets like an end-times devotee. Maybe think about what lead us to this place where law collapsed and how we might not let that happen again?
I feel like it's probably important to remember that the people who were getting pelted with tear gas and shit probably aren't the same people out looting and don't have the same motivations. I don't know, maybe someone washed out their eyes and went immediately to go steal a TV from their local Target, but I have my doubts that the two events are connected that directly.
